Brewer Peter Zein discusses beer, hops and home brew culture among other brew related topics.

“I want Alesmith to be the Rolls Royce representative of the beer segment.  I may not be throwing out new beers at the time, I’ll give you one a year with our decadence.   Other than that I’d like us to just be classic.” ~Peter Zein (Owner/ Brewer)

Peter Zien is an accomplished and highly decorated homebrewer who "always wanted to own a brewery." Since he began brewing in 1995, his beers have earned over 400 medals and honors.  In addition, he is San Diego County's only BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) "Grand Master" Level One Beer Judge, one of their highest ratings.

Stoudt's Brewery - American Hops, Episode One

Over 20 years, Stoudt’s Brewing Company has grown and evolved from a small brewery with limited draught distribution, to a packaging regional microbrewery with distribution in 10 different states, producing over 10,000 barrels a year. Even with the growth over the years, one thing has always remained constant, and that is the attention to detail that goes into every batch of handcrafted beer that is traditionally brewed, packaged and sold with passion by our small team of hardworking dedicated employees. A tradition that was started by Ed and Carol and will be carried on by their children for many years to come. To view short film: Stoudt's Brewery - American Hops, please click on link to view.

CRACK ONE OPEN Wednesday, December 6, 2006

Pick hit: Tommyknocker Maple Nut Brown

Pedigree: English brown ale from the Idaho Springs, Colo., brewery and pub housed in the old Placer Inn, a hangout for miners during the Gold Rush. Since opening its doors in 1994, Tommyknocker Brewery has been a big player in a very competitive market.

Why hoist one: This multiple medal winner is designed to be sipped after a day on the slopes. Well-balanced nut brown ale spiked with maple syrup, which is offset by a malt finish. It's as sweet as it sounds - probably too sweet for many beer drinkers - but it holds together.

CRACK ONE OPEN Wednesday, April 26, 2006

Pick hit: Founder’s Brewery Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale

Pedigree: Year-round flagship brew from Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids, Mich. The microbrewery opened in 1997 and plans to increase its production capacity this year.

Why hoist one: Excellent example of the style, but fresher because it comes from Michigan rather than Glasgow. Smoky, malty flavor offset by good hop action. This ruby red brew is very smooth for its 8.5% alcohol content.

The Best Beer in the World. Period.
Saison Dupont
Origin: Belgium
Alcohol content by volume: 6.5%

With its luminous orangey-blond color and huge, rocky head, this beer just looks great. But wait till you taste it: Like other saisons, Dupont's is made with a secret mix of herbs that give it an addictive earthy taste and an agreeable bitterness. At 6.5 percent, it's also got a mild kick, which balances a range of citrusy, malty flavors that even wizened beer connoisseurs struggle to describe. "Impossibly delicious," says legendary brewmaster Garrett Oliver. Saison Dupont is the "desert island beer" of many men (Oliver and present company included). Pop a cork, guys -- we think you'll feel the same way (brasserie-dupont.com).

Stoudt's American Pale Ale featured in Cleveland's Plain Dealer

Why hoist one: You might have one this week because of the eye- catching, red, white and blue flag label. But this is not a seasonal novelty. It's an American-style ale with a crisp, medium body and a light amber color. Pacific Northwest Cascades hops give it a distinctive bitterness and heady floral aroma.

Pick hit: Ichabod Ale.

Pedigree: Seasonal brew from the New Holland Brewing Co. in Holland, Mich. Fast-growing brewery began as a two-man operation in 1996 and now distributes its beers and ales in seven states, including Ohio. Especially clever label features the headless horseman from Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
